EU Demands Extra £1.7 Billion From The UK
Prime Minister David Cameron is demanding talks with the European Union, after the UK has been told to pay an extra £1.7 billion to the EU Budget.
Officials have recalculated national payments to the EU based on economic performance since 1995.
Mr Cameron has met with Mark Rutte, his Dutch counterpart, in Brussels to discuss his next move.
A Downing Street source told the Financial Times: "It's not acceptable to just change the fees for previous years and demand them back at a moment's notice.
"The European Commission was not expecting this money and does not need this money and we will work with other countries similarly affected to do all we can to challenge this."

British soldier killed in Iraq
A British soldier has been killed in Iraq, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed. The soldier, from 1st Battalion The Light Infantry, died following an attack on a Multi National Force base in Basra City. A mortar round exploded within the perimeter of the base at around 0300 local time, the MoD said.

British Red Cross Drafted In To Help With A&E Crisis
The British Red Cross are being called in to help the NHS deal with the Accident & Emergency crisis. Figures released this week showed the NHS missed its A&E waiting time target, its worst performance in 10 years. Volunteers from the relief charity are helping to transport patients.

UK Warned Over Interest Charges If EU Payment Deadline Missed
The European Commission has warned that the UK will face charges of more than £3.5 million if it misses the 01 December deadline, for a £1.7 billion payment it has been asked to make to the European Union. It is understood that David Cameron has said the UK has "no intention" of paying the money.

Blair to remain “firm” EU rebate
Prime Minister Tony Blair has said that he will be “diplomatic but firm” with European leaders over the issue of the UK’s European Union rebate. The Prime Minister, who was in Moscow for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, was speaking ahead of the forthcoming European summit, which takes place in Brussels on June 16 and 17.
