Respite Unit To Close Despite Criticism

The Health Minister Jim Wells said that while he takes the objections seriously of those opposed to the closure of the respite care unit at Dalriada Hospital, just 69 of Northern Ireland's 4,000 MS sufferers use the facility.

Cuts to the health service are being blamed for the planned closure of the respite unit, which is due to shut from November until March of next year.

Some 1,000 people protested in Ballycastle over the proposed closure of the unit, understood to be NI's only dedicated multiple sclerosis respite unit. Many said that while the closure is being called temporary, they fear it will become permanent.

According to reports, the health minister told MLAs the temporary closure will save more than £500,000.

The closure has been described as a "devastating blow" by the Multiple Sclerosis Society in Northern Ireland.
