Over 1,100 Jobs Announced Across Wales

A total of 1,144 jobs are to be created by six companies across Wales, it has been announced.

The announcements come ahead of the UK Investment Summit Wales 2014 event, taking place over the next two days at Celtic Manor Resort in Newport.

The announcements are:

• Deloitte - 700 jobs - Cardiff. The firm already has 300 staff working at two offices in the city and its global management centre is already based in the enterprise zone

• Griffin Place Communications (GPC) - 300 jobs - Cwmbran. London firm building a new call centre for other businesses specialising in customer care

• Raytheon - 50 jobs - Broughton, Flintshire. Aircraft manufacturer's £1m new design centre of excellence and research and development facility

• Smartpipe Solutions - 44 jobs - Cwmbran. £10m software development and research centre. Set up in London in 2013 it uses customer profiles to provide personalised services across digital platforms

• SPTS Technologies - 30 jobs - Newport. Research and development posts for hi-tech firm which specialises in innovative micro-electronic devices but is also expanding into biomedical applications

• Essentra - 20 jobs - Newport. Another 40 jobs safeguarded at packaging company with a new manufacturing facility

Welcoming the news, Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones said: "These companies could have been located anywhere in the world and I am happy to say they all chose to come to Wales."

Up To 300 Jobs Created By Mobile Phone Company
Mobile phone company EE has said it is to create some 300 jobs in south Wales and north east England. Up to 200 customer services and sales jobs will be created in the firms' Merthyr Tydfil call centre, with the remaining 100 jobs being in Darlington and North Tyneside.

Aldi To Create Over 400 Jobs In Wales
More than 400 jobs are to be created in Wales by supermarket chain Aldi, it has been announced. The retailer has confirmed it will invest £59.5m to construct a new regional distribution centre and offices in Cardiff. The project is being supported by the Welsh Government.

Two Thirds Back Assisted Suicide
The majority of people back the notion of assisted suicide, according to research from Bangor University. The university found two thirds of over 62,000 people surveyed said they agreed with assisted suicide. The report also found that support was around the same among people with terminal illnesses as for the general public.

MPs Urged To Do More For Disabled Workers
MPs are being called on to do more to help disabled jobseekers into work by the Minister for Disabled People, Justin Tomlinson. The Minister said that members of parliament should take a more active role in matching disabled jobseekers with employers in their areas.

Barclays Announce 7,000 UK Job Cuts
Barclays Bank have announced plans to cut up to 12,000 jobs, including 7,000 in the UK. Around half of the staff to be affected by the cuts have been informed, the bank have said. The new round of cuts follow 7,650 job loses last year, with the bank saying that 820 senior managers will be cut along with 220 managing directors and 600 directors.
