Belfast Street Named In Honour Of Scientist

A street in the city's Titanic Quarter is to be named in honour of one of Northern Ireland's most eminent scientists, John Stewart Bell.

Belfast City Council (BCC) received an application in September calling for a street to be named John Bell Crescent. However, the council rejected the application, saying that it went against policy to name streets after individuals.

The new announcement features a compromise, which will see the street named either Bell's Theorem Way or Bell's Theorem Crescent.

The street is being named in honour of Bell's work on the Einstein-Podolsky paradox – which came from a dispute between Albert Einstein and Boris Podolsky.

Bell created a theorem, that upon later experimentation settled the argument, proving Podolsky right and Einstein wrong.

The street naming has been approved by BCC's Strategic Policy and Resources Committee and is expected to finalised at the next full council meeting.
