Refurb Project For L'Derry Gateway

A total of £268,000 is to be invested in a public realm scheme on Carlisle Road, L'Derry.

Carlisle Road is a major shopping street within the city of Derry and is a link between Craigavon Bridge and the Walled City.

The street also lies within the Historic City Conservation Area.

The project is being delivered by DRD Roads Service/Transport NI.

Social Development Minister, Mervyn Storey MLA, welcomed the investment. He said: "Carlisle Road is one of the main gateway routes into Londonderry's city centre. This much needed facelift is therefore essential to create a favourable first impression for visitors to the city.

"As a major shopping street, this work will also enhance the streetscape for the people of Londonderry and complement the recently completed public realm schemes throughout the city centre.

"Once completed, the combined works will result in an identifiable image and enhance the historic buildings in this unique conservation area."

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy added: "The scheme will see the upgrading of 1,200 square metres of paving, 3,200 square metres of resurfaced carriageway and street lighting enhancements. The paving upgrade and street lighting improvements are scheduled to be completed before the end of November 2014 and the carriageway resurfacing is planned for early in the New Year."
