Contractor Appointed For Road Scheme

Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has confirmed a major contract for an improvement scheme at the junction of Steeple Road and Stiley Way in Antrim, has been awarded.

Northstone (NI) Ltd has been awarded the main contract for the £1.2m capital scheme.

This work, which has been valued at £700,000, will involve reconstructing the current signalised junction at Steeple Road and Stiles Way in Antrim. When complete, it will help increase capacity and traffic movements to improve safety and reduce delays.

Preliminary work on the site, which involves relocating underground services, has already started. Work on the main contract is scheduled to begin in January 2015 and be completed by April.

Transport Minister, Danny Kennedy commented: "I am pleased to confirm this significant investment in the transport infrastructure of Antrim. This is a busy junction and this scheme will go a long way to improving safety and increase the capacity of the junction to deal with traffic travelling around the north of Antrim.

"As part of my Department's continuing commitment to sustainable transport this junction will also be of significant benefit to vulnerable road users such as cyclists, pedestrians, the elderly and people with disabilities with improved crossing facilities including a 'Toucan' crossing which completes the recently installed cycle path on Stiles Way."
