Ward Evacuated At Altnagelvin Hospital

A ward at Altnagelvin Hospital in L'Derry had to be evacuated this morning, the Western Health and Social Care Trust has confirmed.

It is understood the precaution was taken after smoke was spotted coming from a piece of equipment.

In a statement, the Western Health and Social Care Trust said: "Smoke was reported coming from a 'bed pan washer' in Ward 5 at Altnagelvin Hospital this morning.

"21 patients were safely transferred from the ward and have been resettled elsewhere within the hospital. It is envisaged that the ward will return to normal business later today.

"The Trust would like to thank its staff and the Emergency Services for their prompt response to the incident."
