Belfast Christmas Market Generates £58m

Belfast's Christmas Market at City Hall generated more than £58 million for the city's economy, according to the City Council.

Almost 1.1m people visited the Market during its five-week stay, with each spending about £50 elsewhere in the city during their visit.

10% of visitors were from outside Northern Ireland, bringing with them an additional spend of almost £12m, Belfast City Council said. £32.24m was spent by people who visited primarily to attend the Market.

Figures released by the Council show visitors spent almost £7m on accommodation, £15m on eating out, £20m on shopping elsewhere in the city, £4m on entertainment and more than £5m on transport during their stay.

Belfast Lord Mayor Nichola Mallon said: "Over the course of its ten years, the Belfast Christmas Market has been an invaluable addition to our tourism offering, and these figures emphasise the value of bringing events such as this into our city and the resulting benefit they have for our traders, restaurateurs, hoteliers, local people and visitors alike.

"With the Tall Ships returning to Belfast for four days at the beginning of July, it is my hope that the council can continue to attract major events and that the city will continue to reap the resulting benefits."
