Ministers Pledge To Support JTI Gallaher Workers
Social Development Minister, Mervyn Storey MLA, and Employment and Learning Minister, Dr Stephen Farry, have said they will do everything they can to help those impacted by the closure of the JTI Gallaher factory in Ballymena in 2017.
Following confirmation by JTI Gallaher that it will completely close its Ballymena based factory, resulting in the loss of nearly 900 jobs, the Social Development Minister has pledged the support of the Social Security Agency in supporting people through what could be difficult times ahead.
The Employment and Learning Minister also outlined the support his Department can provide.
Minister Storey said: "This is devastating news for the employees and families of JTI Gallahers in Ballymena, and for the wider economic position for the town and the local area. This decision, which has followed a period of consultation by the company, is extremely disappointing.
"I want to take this opportunity to assure those who may be affected in the coming years that staff within the Social Security Agency will be there to provide all the necessary support and advice they can.
"Agency staff will also be working closely with other Government Departments in the future to ensure that impacted workers will be able to access government assistance right across the board."
Minister Farry said: "My Department will work proactively delivering redundancy clinics to the company and their employees. The Redundancy Advice Service works in partnership with a range of agencies including the Further Education Colleges and HMRC to provide advice on alternative job opportunities and access to training courses and a range of other issues such as benefits and taxation.
"The Redundancy Advice Service will co-ordinate and deliver a tailored package of support and employees will be provided with information and professional advice about the options and support available to them including employment, training, re-skilling, education opportunities and careers advice."

Consultation On New Employment Programme Launched
Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry today launched a public consultation on a proposed new employment programme for Northern Ireland. The new programme, which has been called provisionally Steps 2 Success (NI), will replace the Department’s main adult return to work provision, Steps to Work, which was introduced in September 2008.

L'Derry will play host to a major Jobs Fair and Advice Forum on 11 September 2013. The fair, which will take place in the Millennium Forum between 10am and 4pm, has been organised by the Department for Employment and Learning in conjunction with Derry City Council, CultureTECH and EURES.

JobBridge Is A Pathway To Full-Time Employment – Coffey
Fine Gael Waterford Deputy, Paudie Coffey, has said that the JobBridge internship scheme is a clear and dependable pathway to full-time employment, which has seen 36 per cent of intern graduates in Waterford moving directly into employment, while 61 per cent of interns nationally have secured employment five months after graduating from the scheme.
