Catholic Church Vandalised With Sectarian Graffiti

A Catholic church in east Belfast has been vandalised with sectarian graffiti.

Paint was daubed on the doors of the church in Willowfield overnight. It appeared after a memorial on the Newtownards Road commemorating two men who were killed by the IRA was vandalised.

Alliance East Belfast Councillor David Armitage said: "There can never be any justification for attacking any place of worship. I am very disappointed that there are those who believe it is acceptable to paint such disgraceful messages on a church. This despicable vandalism has no place in our society.

"I am very concerned that this incident comes after a memorial on the Newtownards Road was vandalised and would appeal for calm from on sides. These incidents are damaging community relations in the area. Those responsible are thugs who are adding nothing to our society except to create tension in the community.

"I would urge anybody with any information about this graffiti to contact the Police or Crimestoppers."
