£2.5m Investment For New Sports Pitches

The Department for Social Development (DSD) has announced a £2.5m investment to build seven new sports pitches across Northern Ireland.

Four of the new pitches will be built at four Orange Lodge grounds and three at GAA grounds.

The investment includes:

• Maguiresbridge Loyal Orange Lodge (LOL) 14, New 3G pitch (£284,222)

• Eoghan Ruadh, GFC, Dungannon, New grass pitch and walking track (£417,800)

• Newry & Mourne Council/Valley Rangers Football Club, Kilkeel, new 3G pitch (£246,971)

• Drumintee GFC, Armagh, New grass pitch and walking track (£249,521)

• Fivemiletown District & Cultural Association, (Roughan) new 3G pitch (£290,406)

• Tullylish GFC, Gilford, New grass pitch and walking track (£429,798)

• Kilcluney LOL 132, Markethill, extend existing 3G pitch to full size. Costs to be determined.

Maguiresbridge LOL is the first group to receive funding. The Maguiresbridge Pitch Development & Management Committee was established in May 2013 to develop and bring forward a Shared Facility project to develop community relations in the Maguiresbridge and surrounding areas.

The Committee acquired the site at a cost of £30,000 for the purpose of developing a 3G pitch for the local community in this rural area.

The Department for Social Development funding of £284,000 will help towards the construction of a new pitch and include fencing, a footpath and floodlights.

NI Fastest Growing UK Region For New Companies
Northern Ireland was the fastest-growing region of the UK for newly registered companies in 2023, according to a new index from Ulster Bank and Beauhurst. The New Startup Index highlights how in 2023 Northern Ireland gained 14,000 new companies, a 59% increase on 2022.

£15m Investment For Sports Pitches
Belfast City Council has announced £15m is to be invested in improving sports pitches across the city. The money will be used to improve playing surfaces, encourage a great use of the facilities and increase excellence in a number of sports. The announcement is part of the local authority's wider £150m city investment programme.

£6.5m Ards Park Upgrade Approved
Planning approval has been granted for a £6.5m transformation of leisure facilities at Londonderry Park in Newtownards. Environment Minister Mark H Durkan announced the go-ahead for the scheme, which will be supported by £6.5m investment on behalf of Ards Borough Council.

Belfast Lord Mayor Welcomes Progress On Avoniel Redevelopment
Belfast Lord Mayor, Councillor Kate Nicholl, has welcomed the progress being made on the £8 million redevelopment of Avoniel, which is due to reopen in October. The transformation of the former Avoniel Leisure Centre site aims to address the lack of 3G pitches in the area, while also providing flexible indoor space for the community.
