Electoral figures show 28,000 drop

Northern Ireland's new Electoral Register has shown a drop of 28,000, according to latest figures.

The statistics, which are compared to last year's Assembly election figures, were published on Monday.

Northern Ireland's chief electoral officer, Denis Stanley, urged those within 'disadvantaged' groups, such as young people, students, those with learning disabilities and residents in poorer areas, who have not registered to do so ahead of June's European elections.

Today's figures follow the first full year of the Electoral Fraud (Northern Ireland) Act 2002 which was introduced to overcome widely held perceptions of impersonation and electoral abuse in Northern Ireland.

It brought about the most significant change to electoral law and practice for many years and replaced household registration with individual registration. It also introduced the requirement for photographic identification at polling stations.
