A front seat passenger of a van has died in a road traffic accident in Co Down on Monday.

Christopher Sheridan, 20, of St Mary's Terrace, Newry, was killed when the van in which he was travelling was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry.

The incident occurred on the dual carriageway outside Warrenpoint at around 3pm on Monday.

The two occupants of the lorry were uninjured.

Meanwhile, the woman whose body was recovered from a car, which went off the road into a canal outside Newry yesterday, has been named as Geraldine McErlean, 42, from Horn Walk, Belfast.

The woman died after her car struck a bank to the side of the Omeath Road and plunged into the Fathom Line Canal.

Police divers were called in to search the canal after a passer-by spotted damage to the bank of the canal on the Omeath Road early on Monday.
