John Hume to step down as MP and MEP
John Hume has announced he is to step down as both an MP and MEP because of ill health.
Mr Hume, 67, said the decision was taken on the grounds of medical advice.
He will step down as MP at the next Westminster election. He will also quit as MEP once the SDLP announce a new candidate at the party's annual conference later this month.
The former SDLP leader has served as a member of the European Parliament since 1979.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner is internationally known for his work in bringing about the current peace process.
He began his political career as a founder member of the SDLP in 1970 after taking part in civil rights marches during the late 1960's.
He took over the party leadership in 1979 until his resignation in 2001 due to health problems and a heavy workload.
He was succeeded by current leader, Mark Durkan.
