BT awarded NI broadband tender
BT has been awarded the tender to establish broadband services across Northern Ireland, it was announced today.
Ian Pearson, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, said the company had been chosen as it had been judged the most "economically advantageous" supplier.
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) will now enter into further negotiations with BT to finalise and secure agreement on proposals to provide comprehensive and equitable broadband services to all of Northern Ireland.
Mr Pearson said: "Today’s announcement is an important milestone in realising Government’s vision for telecommunications and indicates that Northern Ireland has a real opportunity to be the first region of the UK to have 100% coverage of broadband services. This will allow all our businesses, even those in the most rural locations, to avail of broadband services to compete in the global marketplace.
"The tender attracted a very good response from industry and our evaluation of bids has been extremely thorough. The process clearly identified that the bid by BT offers the best prospect of securing a value for money service for the people and businesses of Northern Ireland.
Twenty-seven companies and consortia responded to DETI’s tender seeking provision of broadband services across Northern Ireland, which was issued on 22 July 2003.
The purpose of the competition is to provide a standard of broadband services delivered across Northern Ireland and is based on best value for use of public monies.

Rural Broadband Project Complete
