Forests have key role in fight against poverty and pollution: UN
Forests and similar natural habitats have a key role to play in alleviating poverty and protecting the environment, a UN food agency has said today.
Hosny El-Lakany, of the Rome-based UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), said that forestry needed to be fully integrated with other sectors in policy development, particularly agriculture.
Commenting on the forthcoming meeting of FAO's African Forestry and Wildlife Commission, set to open in Accra, Ghana, on Wednesday, Mr El-Lakany emphasised the need “to end the isolation of forestry from mainstream development initiatives”.
He said that while forests had been gaining greater global attention – deforestation and forest degradation were continuing at an alarming rate.
The Accra meeting will offer a chance for delegates from across Africa to review these issues and to exchange national experiences in sustainable forest management.
The African Forestry and Wildlife Commission is one of six regional forestry commissions worldwide that provide a high-level forum for addressing emerging forest issues with key players both from within and outside government.

A consultation on the future management of the Public Forest Estate has been halted and all forestry clauses in the Public Bodies Bill will be removed, Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman confirmed today. The Government has in fact abandoned its controversial plans to privatise England's public forests in the face of widespread criticism.

Rescue operation scaled down in devastated Baghdad UN HQ
The search for people trapped alive in the devastated Baghdad headquarters of the UN is being scaled down following yesterday afternoon's bomb attack. The latest casualty figures for those killed stands at 17 and 100 people injured in the blast that ripped through the hotel building collapsing part of the structure.

Cyclist Traffic Signals Launched In East London
Bow Roundabout in east London has become the first site to trial low-level traffic lights for cyclists. Transport for London, which hope to introduce the lights at 11 other sites, say that 80% of cyclists are in favour of their use. The new signals give cyclists an early start ahead f traffic.
