Minister oversees joint security measures for Euro 2004

Home Office Minister Hazel Blears is visiting Portugal this week to see first hand the joint co-operation between UK and Portuguese authorities ahead of the Euro 2004 football championships.

The UK government and police have joined together to oversee the most extensive multi-agency preparations ever for an overseas tournament, the Home Office said.

Already, banning order legislation that will prevent more than 2,000 football troublemakers from travelling to Portugal. The move is central to implementing effective crowd control measures, and is supported by £5 million for specialist policing operations. Dozens of operations in 28 forces have resulted in 134 banning orders so far, with hundreds more expected in coming months.

Portugal is hosting the European Championships 2004 from 12 June to 4 July. England is scheduled to play France in Lisbon on June 13, Switzerland in Coimbra on June 17; and Croatia in Lisbon on June 21.

The Minister will meet her opposite number, Minister of Internal Affairs Nuno Magalhães, in Lisbon today. They will discuss governmental and police co-operation and agree a memorandum of understanding between the two countries.

Hazel Blears will also visit Coimbra where England play their second match against Switzerland on 17 June. She will meet the Mayor and be given a tour of the stadium and will then attend England's friendly game in the Algarve resort of Faro on Wednesday.

"The two governments and law enforcement agencies have been working extremely successfully together for more than a year and I welcome the opportunity to witness first hand the results of this co-operation," she said.

"I have confidence in the strong, mutual commitment on behalf of both governments to ensure that English and other visiting fans have a great time safe in the knowledge that everything possible is being done to minimise the risk of violence or disorder."

Figures Show A Rise In Retail Sales

Two men have been jailed at Southwark Crown Court for a 'smash and grab' robbery at a jewellers in Kilburn Lane, west London. Jake Maunders, 20, of Tollbridge Close and Alex Rogers, 20 of Sutton Way, pleaded guilty to the robbery at Ishtar Jewellers in Kilburn Lane.

House Prices Rise By 12% In June
UK annual house price inflation in June 2007 was 12.1%, up from 10.8% in May 2007. Annual house price inflation in London was 17.5% in June, up from 14.3% in May. The UK annual house price inflation rate for the 3 months to June was 11.3% and 15.1% in London. The UK house price inflation rate rose from 10.8% in May 2007 to 12.1% in June 2007.

England's Buses Turn Green
Over 150 new low carbon buses will join fleets throughout England saving around 50,000 tonnes of CO2 thanks to £15m of additional Government funding, Transport Minister Norman Baker announced today. The funding is intended to put low carbon buses within the reach of as many operators and local authorities as possible throughout England.

May, June and July 'wettest months on record'
May, June and July have been the wettest months on record, even before July is over, the Met Office has revealed. Provisional figures from the Met Office show that 387.6mm of rain have already fallen across England and Wales, making it the wettest May to July since records began in 1766.
