£2m earmarked to rebuild Iraq's legal system
More than £2 million has been earmarked to help rebuild Iraq's judicial system, the government has confirmed.
The money will fund training for almost 1,000 judges, prosecutors and lawyers. The training, along with study tours and partnerships between institutions, could start as early as the end of this month.
The government hopes that the funding will also help to increase independence, professionalism and respect for human rights in Iraq.
Announcing the commitment, International Development Secretary Hilary Benn said: "Over the last 30 years Iraq's judicial system was deeply politicised. Corruption, torture and other abuses by law enforcement agencies were widespread. This assistance will provide much-needed help to the reform process which is so critical to the wider rebuilding of Iraqi society."
The Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith, said: "I am delighted that the UK, through partnership with international NGOs, is helping the Iraqi people to build that system."
The programme will be managed by the International Legal Assistance Consortium in partnership with the Iraqi Minister of Justice, Chief Justice and President of the Bar Association in Baghdad.

British soldier dies in Basrah helicopter crash
A British soldier has died after an RAF helicopter crashed in southern Iraq today. The MoD confirmed that the soldier was killed in "an accident" involving an RAF Puma helicopter at Basrah International Airport. Two other British military personnel were injured during the incident.

Extra £100m pledged for Iraq
The Foreign Secretary has announced that the UK Government will provide an extra £100 million to be spent on rebuilding Iraq. Mrs Beckett said: "This brings our total humanitarian and reconstruction support for Iraq's reconstruction to £744 million or $1.5 billion.

Iraqi governing council set up
A new civilian governing council has been established in Baghdad with members drawn from Shi'ite, Sunni and secular backgrounds. The council, which consists of 25 members, said that it would serve as an "expression of the national Iraqi will in the wake of the collapse of the former oppressive regime".

Babies who move their eyes more often than their peers at the age of six months are more likely to meet criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as children, according to researchers funded by the Medical Research Council (MRC). Researchers used eye tracking technology to measure 104 babies (aged 6-8 months) at high or low familial risk for ASD.
