Broadband internet connections rise in UK
The latest monthly update to Office of National Statistics (ONS) survey of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) has shown that between December 2002 and December 2003 there was a 6.5% increase in the number of subscriptions to the Internet.
The month-on-month change between November and December 2003 was 0.8%. The market share for permanent connections continued to increase in December and now stands at 22.5% compared with 10.8% a year before. Dial-up connections continued to decrease in December 2003.
According to the figures, the subscription patterns for dial-up and permanent Internet connections continued to display quite different trends. The year-on-year decrease in dial-up connections to December 2003 reached 7.0%, while the year-on-year growth was for permanent connections was 114.5%, with an increase of 5.3% from November 2003 to December 2003.
Though dial-up connections continue to dominate the overall number of subscriptions, permanent connections continue to dramatically increase their market share. Permanent connections made up 22.5% of total subscriptions in December 2003, up from 21.6% in November 2003. This increase in the market share reflects the continued marketing drive and increase in availability of broadband services.
The UK has one of the fastest growing broadband markets in Europe.

Internet connections peak in March
The latest monthly update of the government survey of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) has revealed that the index peaked in March 2004 and since then has decreased slightly, by 0.5%, between May and June 2004. However, compared with June 2003 there was a 6.7% increase in the number of active subscriptions to the Internet by June 2004.

In the month between September and October 2004 the index increased by 0.3% to 132.

The latest SRC-KPMG Scottish Retail Sales Monitor has revealed that Scottish sales outpaced its UK counterpart for the month of July. It is thought Andy Murray's triumph at Wimbledon, as well as the sustained period of hot weather combined to give Scotland's high streets their best performance for two years.
