Passenger numbers up at City of Derry Airport
The number of passengers using the City of Derry Airport has shown a marked increase over the past year, new figures released today have revealed.
According to statistics, released by the airport, the number of passengers using the facility increased to over 217,000 during 2003, an increase of some 6.2% on 2002.
Private and business passenger numbers also increased by 20% to over 5,600, while package holidays to sun destinations showed an increase to over 12,000.
Commenting on the figures, the chairman of the Airport Committee, Alderman William Hay said: "A recently released European study on the social and economic benefits of airports highlighted the benefits of having a regional airport as an economic engine for the generation of tourism and regional development.
"The continued growth of passenger numbers is very encouraging for us and further indicates the importance of the facility for the North West region."
The London-Stansted Ryanair flight remains the airport's busiest route with 134,309 passengers using this route alone in 2003.
The British Airways Dublin route in particular made an impressive increase of 22% to over 29,500.
The British Airways Glasgow route, despite very strong competition from other low cost operators, performed well increasing to 15,700 passengers, an increase of approximately 1,000 passengers during 2002.

Enrolment Numbers Increase At 21 NI Schools
Enrolment numbers at 21 primary and post-primary schools has been increased, Education Minister Paul Givan has announced. The announcement has been made following a pilot programme developed to adjust admissions and enrolment numbers in schools whose actual enrolment has historically been in excess of their approved admissions numbers.
