Majority of NI consumers concerned about meat safety
A new survey has found that the majority of people Northern Ireland are increasingly worried about the safety of all types of meat.
The findings, which are part of a survey carried out by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) annually, revealed that 84% of people in the province are concerned about meat safety compared to just 43% in 2001.
Further findings from the 'Northern Ireland Consumer Attitudes to Food Survey 2003' included:
The FSA says this will help improve its knowledge and understanding of consumer views, as well as to help gauge changes of public confidence in food safety.

Further findings from the 'Northern Ireland Consumer Attitudes to Food Survey 2003' included:
- Food labeling: 48% of NI respondents were concerned about the accuracy of health claims on food labels though the majority (58%) of this group were “fairly” rather than “very concerned”.
- General food safety: Between 45% and 52% were concerned about the amount of fat, salt and sugar in food.
- Shopping and eating habits: Most food shopping is done at supermarkets (86%), but local shops play an important role in “top-up” shopping (92%).
- Healthy eating and nutrition: There has been a significant increase in the number of respondents aware of the recommended amount of fruit and vegetables to be consumed every day.
The FSA says this will help improve its knowledge and understanding of consumer views, as well as to help gauge changes of public confidence in food safety.

NI Grassroot Sports Facilities To Benefit From £5.66m Fund
The UK Government and the Irish FA have announced that 17 projects across NI will benefit from a £5.66 million fund aimed at boosting grassroots sports facilities. The projects will receive funding for 3G artificial grass pitches, with 12 projects receiving money to install new floodlights.

Man Extradited From Poland To NI To Stand Trial For Alleged Child Sex Offences
A 59-year old man that has been extradited from Poland to Northern Ireland is to stand trial for sexual offences against children today, 31 January. Officers from the PSNI's International Policing Unit extradited the man yesterday, 30 January, ahead of his expected appearance before Downpatrick Crown Court today.

Yellow Weather Warning Issued For Parts Of NI
A yellow weather warning for wind has been issued by the Met Office for parts of Northern Ireland on Wednesday, 31 January. The weather warning comes into effect at 9.00 am and is due to remain in place until 5.00 pm with warnings that it could impact travel, cause power outages and lead to large waves in coastal areas.
