Regional cancer services framework group established

The establishment of a new Regional Cancer Services Framework group has been announced by Northern Ireland's Chief Medical Officer, Dr Henrietta Campbell.

Dr Campbell, who was speaking today at a workshop for the Northern Ireland Cancer Network (NICAN), said the Framework would consider the ongoing development of cancer services over the next 20 years, providing a cohesive structure for the provision of a uniformly high standard of care for people of all ages with cancer.

Issues to be considered will include emerging research and new technologies, prevention, screening, early detection, palliative and supportive care, workforce, cancer services organisation, audit and research.

“We have already made significant progress in the development of our cancer services with the implementation of the recommendations in the 1996 Campbell Report,” said Dr Campbell.

“We now have a holistic approach to cancer care, with cancer patients being treated by cancer specialists working in multidisciplinary cancer teams. Cancer units have been established at Belfast City, Altnagelvin, Antrim, Craigavon and the Ulster Hospital and work on the new cancer centre is on target for completion by December 2005."

The Framework will consider the development of cancer services over the next 20 years to provide a cohesive structure for the provision of a uniformly high standard of care for people of all ages with cancer, Dr Campbell concluded.
