Electricity prices set to rise in Northern Ireland
Electricity prices in Northern Ireland are set to rise by almost 3%, it was announced today.
NIE said the increase was necessary due to a rise in power station fuel costs.
The price rise will see 16.5p per week or £8.60 a year added onto the average customers bill.
NIE spokesperson Robin Greer said the rise was being driven by the escalating cost of the fuel used in Northern Ireland power stations, which has increased by approximately 12% in the last year.
However, he said NIE's tariff increase was both in line with inflation and below recent much higher increases in electricity and gas prices to domestic customers in other parts of the UK and Ireland.
The change will apply to domestic electricity bills from 1 April.

Power NI is to increase its electricity prices by 13.8 %. This is the firms biggest price rise in 5 years. The price increase will come into effect on 01 October 2018. Stephen McCully, Managing Director of Power NI, said: "Putting our prices up is the last thing we want to do, but unfortunately we are at the mercy of fluctuating world fuel prices.

SSE Airtricity Prices Increase By 33%
Energy provider SSE Airtricity is to increase its electricity prices for customers by 33% on Wednesday. It is the second price rise in six months for consumers in Northern Ireland, after it was increased by 9% in December last year.

Planning permission has been refused to develop high rise office blocks in Belfast. Sinn Féin MLA Deirdre Hargey has welcomed the decision and said it is a "victory for the market community". She said: "These office blocks, if constructed, would have towered over our local community.

Cost Of TV Licence To Increase
The cost of a TV licence is set to rise from 01 April. The full licence fee will increase to £147 from £145.50 and a black and white licence will go up to £49.50. This is the first rise since April 2010. People who are severely sight impaired are entitled to a 50% concession and a licence fee will cost them £73.50.
