Plans unveiled to promote social inclusion of older people
A Strategy Document outlining Government plans for promoting the social inclusion of older people in Northern Ireland has been launched by the Minister with responsibility for older people's needs, John Spellar.
The document, entitled 'Ageing in an Inclusive Society', aims to deliver in the Northern Ireland Government's vision for older people.
Speaking at the launch of the Document at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown, Mr Spellar said: "Government policy aims to ensure that, as far as possible, during the final third of our lives we should be comfortable, safe and financially secure.
"The challenge for Government is to act as an agent for change, rethinking policies and approaches to public services aimed at improving the lives of older people. This strategy is an important first step in that direction."
Priority objectives contained within the Document include: Integrating services to improve health and quality of life; Ensuring access to financial resources; Increasing safety and security; Accessing services; Promoting greater participation in civic life; and Working in partnership.
There are almost 300,000 people aged over 60 living in Northern Ireland and they make up 17.6% of the population.

Rates Suspension And Refunds For Victoria Square Apartment Owners
The owners of the disputed Victoria Square Apartments will no longer be charged rates, with refunds to be issued for rates paid since April 2019. The valuation of properties within the Victoria Square apartment block has been subject to review by Land & Property Services (LPS) as part of an ongoing valuation appeals process.
