Gardiner calls for creative content for broadband

Enterprise Minister Barry Gardiner has urged companies with expertise in developing broadband content to register their interest with DETI in contributing to a new initiative that is expected to lead to the development of innovative broadband content.

Mr Gardiner said he wanted to stimulate innovation in broadband content, which will provide substantial international business opportunities for Northern Ireland's creative sector.

“Northern Ireland has been very successful in developing a pervasive broadband network across the region with broadband services available to some 98% of the population today, to be 100% by the end of the year,” the Minister said.

“A number of studies, carried out on behalf of government and industry, have identified the need for new and innovative 'rich' content, which can be delivered by broadband and I would urge all those who have an interest in working with Government to make this happen locally to register."

Mr Spellar said the DETI was considering a new initiative targeting digital content companies within the NI creative sector.

The initiative would seek to promote the growth of Northern Ireland content companies by positioning them to take advantage of the commercial conditions inherent in today's global market.
