Sanchez looks for morale building result

Northern Ireland manager Lawrie Sanchez will be looking for an improved result against Poland tonight in what is essentially a morale boosting fixture in this Group 6 World Cup qualifying game.

Following Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at the hands of England, Northern Ireland will be looking to cut out mistakes which led to a couple of goals at Old Trafford as well as improving their attacking options which were limited to one shot on goal.

However, Sanchez’s men will be up against it after Poland hit eight goals past Azerbaijan at the weekend. The Poles will also have the psychological edge knowing that they carved open the Irish defence in the opening World Cup game at Windsor Park which ended in a 3-0 win for the visitors.

Tonight’s game in Warsaw, which kicks off at 7pm BST, will see a couple of changes for Northern Ireland with James Quinn likely to partner David Healy in attack while Steve Davis will replace Damien Johnson in midfield following the Birmingham man’s booking at the weekend.

In addition Lawrie Sanchez looks set to play a 3-5-2 formation with Mark Williams coming in at centre half alongside Aaron Hughes and Colin Murdock.

This will see Chris Baird and Keith Gillespie looking to fill the right wing back berth.

Likely Northern Ireland team: M Taylor, C Baird, A Hughes, C Murdock, M Williams, T Capaldi, S Davis, J Whitley, T Doherty, D Healy, J Quinn.
