Schoolboy shot in head allowed home

Darragh Somers, the five-year old boy shot in the head as he played in his school playground six weeks ago, was allowed home from hospital today.

He returned to his home near Enniskillen in County Fermanagh after what doctors said was a miraculous recovery from the shooting, which almost cost him his life.

Darragh's father Gerald thanked medical staff for his son's care during his time in hospital.

The five-year-old was left in a critical condition following the shooting and had to undergo two major operations at the Belfast Royal Hospital for Sick Children, but has now recovered exceptionally well from the ordeal.

No one has yet come forward to admit responsibility for the shooting incident in which Darragh was shot in the head by a .22 calibre bullet, although both the PSNI and Darragh’s family have said from the outset they believe it was an unfortunate accident.

Ballistics tests carried out on dozens of legally held weapons seized in the area by police have proved inconclusive.

Police said that they believed someone out shooting in nearby fields may have inadvertently shot Darragh.
