DUP leader appointed to Privy Council |
|
DUP leader Ian Paisley has been appointed to the Privy Council, it was confirmed today.
Downing Street announced the appointment on Friday which will see Dr Paisley join the council which officially advises the Queen.
"The Queen has been pleased to approve Ian Paisley be sworn of Her Majesty's most honourable Privy Council," a Downing Street statement said.
DUP deputy leader Peter Robinson described the news as "greatly deserved".
"For close to half a century, Ian Paisley has dominated the political landscape of our Province and far beyond. He is one MP who consistently captures the attention of the House of Commons," Mr Robinson said.
"All the officers, executive members, elected representatives and members of the DUP offer Ian their hearty congratulations, continued love and support."
Although the Privy Council dates back to the earliest days of the monarchy, when it advised the King or Queen on matters of state, its duties nowadays are largely formal and ceremonial.
The DUP leader is entitled to the status as the leader of the fourth largest political party in Parliament and will now have the right to be called 'Right Honourable'.
