Lyric Theatre reopens following water damage |
|
The Lyric Theatre has reopened after flash flooding forced the evacuation of the audience on New Years Eve.
It is understood that a loose drain on the flat roof allowed water to leak onto the stage causing damage to electrical equipment. This was the second time in a month that the theatre was closed down due to waterlogged facilities.
Acting Marketing Manager Richard Gaston referred to the previous incident as an "unfortunate coincidence" on a very wet day and said that the only show cancelled was the Saturday afternoon performance, as the venue was closed on Sunday and Monday for the New Year's holidays.
Those who did miss out on Saturday were given a refund or tickets for another performance.
Lyric Chairman Sid McDowell said the theatre had been closed due to "health and safety concerns" adding that he considered the building "no longer fit for the purpose".
It was announced last year that a £12 million theatre was to be built on the current site of the Lyric. Work on the new building is due to commence in 2007 with the theatre due for completion in 2009.
