Sword attack in west Belfast

Police in west Belfast have appealed for witnesses following a serious assault yesterday afternoon.

At around 2pm, a member of the public contacted police after he located his stolen car in the Dungloe Crescent area of the town. As the owner and his friend approached the car, they were attacked by a man armed with a sword, who attempted to get into the stolen vehicle.

The attacker then smashed a window on the car. The two men ran towards their car which was parked nearby and got inside. The assailant followed them and proceeded to smash a window in an attempt to stab the men, one of whom sustained a facial injury.

The assailant then made his escape up an alleyway in Dungloe Crescent.

He is described as being aged in his early twenties, around 6ft tall, of thin build and with short black hair. He was wearing a white top with vertical stripes.

Police have asked for anyone who may have witnessed the attack or who may have seen this man run away from the area, to contact them at Grosvenor Road on 0845 600 8000 or anonymously on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.

PSNI Identify Body Recovered From Lough Neagh
A body recovered in a coastline area of Lough Neagh on Sunday 18th February has been identified as Alan Whiteside. The 33-year-old Mr Whiteside was reported missing to police in Antrim on Sunday, 17 December. PSNI Detective Inspector Lenaghan said that Mr Whiteside was identified following a post-mortem examination.

Appeal After Masked Men Force Entry Into Home Of Elderly Man
The PSNI have issued an appeal for information after five masked me forced entry into the home of an man aged in his 70s, on the Saintfield Road. Police received a report shortly before 11.30pm on Saturday, 17th February that between 10pm and 10.30pm on the same evening, five masked men entered a house in the Saintfield Road area.

Former City Centre Police Station To Become New 74-Bedroom Hotel
A former police station in Belfast city centre is to be redeveloped for a new 74-bedroom hotel. Belfast City Council's Planning Committee approved the development on Queen Street, along with granting Listed Building Consent to bring the building into use again.
