Belfast sex shops under threat
Six sex shops in the centre of Belfast were under threat today after Belfast City Council's Health and Safety Committee rejected their applications for operating licences.
The shop owners were also warned they could face fines of up to £30,000 if they continue trading without a licence.
The decision to block the licences where taken after a number of complaints were lodged from local residents who voiced concern at the contents of shops on Gresham Street and North Queen Street.
Objections were also raised about some of the applicants themselves.
However, it is believed that the shop owners are considering legal action if they are forced to comply with the council decision.
One shop owner expressed his disbelief that shops in Belfast were being refused licences when cities such as Glasgow and Manchester were not.

'Plan Ahead' For St Patrick's Day Events This Weekend
Belfast City Council has outlined traffic and travel arrangements ahead of this Sunday's St Patrick's Day event in Belfast. A number of traffic diversions will be in place in and around Belfast city centre. Visitors and participants are advised to plan their journey in advance and leave extra time to travel to and from the city centre.

Lords deny licence for Belfast sex shop
A Belfast sex shop owner has been denied a licence after the House of Lords backed Belfast City Council’s decision not to grant one. The five Law Lords unanimously overturned a judgement by the Court of Appeal in Belfast 19 months ago that the city’s council had breached the human rights of the company by refusing the licence to trade.

Sex Attack Victims 'Under Age'
Over half of victims of sex crime in Northern Ireland are under 18. That's according to PSNI figures that show 56% of all victims of reported sex abuse – including rape, indecent assault and indecent exposure – between 2008 and 2009 were under 18, with an average of three sex offences against children recorded every day.
