Display Of MOT Disc Enforced
As if drivers haven't enough of a 'taxing time' already, with a much more aggressive approach by the authorities targeting those who fail to pay their road fund licences, drivers in Northern Ireland will soon be facing a fine of £200 if they fail to display an MOT disc on windscreens.
The Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) is making it a legal requirement from 1 May to remind motorists when their vehicle is due for a test.
Brendan Magee, Chief Executive, DVA said: "Compliance with the vehicle test system is a major factor in ensuring that the vehicles used on Northern Ireland's roads are roadworthy.
"The introduction of the mandatory display of the MoT disc will not only act as a reminder to vehicle users that their vehicle is due a test but it will aid enforcement by the DVA."
The MoT test inspects cars for safety and roadworthiness and in Northern Ireland they are performed at DVA test centres.
The DVA has introduced several measures to ensure vehicles are maintained and tested properly.
These include the introduction of Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN), the provision of MoT reminders, telephone and online booking and now, the new introduction of the mandatory display of the MoT discs - which were previously a voluntary measure - being an attachment to the actual Test Certificate which the motorist would, is he felt it appropriate, detach and display alongside the tax disc.
There has already been a considerable drop in those dodging MoT tests from 28.2% in 2002 to 9.6% in 2007, the DVA related.

DVTA issues mock vehicle test certificates warning
The Driver & Vehicle Testing Agency (DVTA) has warned customers to be on the lookout for invalid vehicle test certificates which might easily be confused with MOTs. The certificates are being issued by a private individual and are headed ‘Vehicle Obligatory Safety Test’, or ‘VOST’. They include a disc similar in format to those issued for an MOT.

Three In Hospital After Police Vehicle Collides With Another Vehicle
Two police officers and a civilian remain in hospital following a collision in Newry on Saturday, 13 April. It is understood that the police officers were travelling in a police vehicle to attend a separate incident at about 7.30pm when they collided with another vehicle on the Fathom Road.

Minister calls for introduction of MOT disc
Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Angela Smith has announced proposals for the introduction of an MOT disc for motorists in Northern Ireland. It is hoped that the MOT disc, like the tax disc, will act as a reminder to motorists when their MOT test is due.

MoT Update: Priority Contact Line Opens
A contact line has today opened for motorists impacted by the ongoing MoT backlog. The priority service is primarily for drivers who own a four year-old car in need of its first MoT as well as taxis and car dealerships. It comes as thousands of appointments were suspended last month after issues with vehicle lifting equipment were identified.
