Threat To UK Universities Standing

Without increased investment there is a 'real danger' that UK universities could lose their standing as a world leader for higher education, the director of Russell Group has said.

Cambridge and Oxford have dropped down to third and fourth place respectively in the Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings.

Dr Wendy Piatt, director general of the Russell Group, an association of leading UK research-intensive universities, said: "Without increased investment there is a real danger that the UK's success will not be sustained."

Dr Piatt who spoke of reservations over the accuracy of the rankings said there was increasing global competition from other nations who are investing more money in universities. She said: "The table reflects the growing strength of our major competitors - particularly the US institutions - who benefit from much higher levels of investment than UK universities."

The doctor also spoke of increased competition from China who have made huge investments in higher education and science in recent years.

"China already looks set to overtake the UK very soon in terms of total research publications, and its universities have been steadily climbing up international league tables," she said.

Other countries significantly increasing funding in universities include India, Brazil and Australia.
