Baby Assault Condemned

A local politician has rounded on those responsible for a weekend attack that saw an eight-month-old baby boy hurt.

The child suffered bruising while his mother's wrist was broken after masked men attacked them in east Belfast.

A man also suffered head and hand injuries in the attack at a house in the Bloomfield Parade area at about 11.30pm on Friday.

The baby had bruises to his head and while all three people were treated in hospital, they were later discharged. Police said they had yet to establish a motive for the attack.

Robin Newton, the East Belfast DUP MLA, (pictured) said the parents, grandparents and all the decent people of east Belfast will roundly condemn the thugs who he said "smashed their way into the house, attacking the adults and also assaulted a baby".

"This scandalous attack on two adults - for whatever reason - will be condemned by all right thinking residents of the Bloomfield district.

"It is only by good fortune that the head injuries to the baby are not serious but those who carried out this shameful beating did not know or care about the level of the baby’s injuries.

"I am appealing to anyone who has any information about this violent incident to contact the police so those who carry out this brand of brutality can be taken before the courts," he concluded.
