Conor Murphy Told Of Weekend Assassination Plot
Sinn Féin politician Conor Murphy has been warned of a plot to kill him.
It is believed the threat came from a loyalist paramilitary faction calling itself the Orange Volunteers, a sometimes cover name for the Loyalist Volunteer Force.
Police told the Stormont Minister paramilitaries were planning to kill him at the weekend, in the Newry area.
No other details of the planned murder bid have been made public.
A PSNI spokesman said they "do not comment on the personal security arrangements of individuals".
"Where we become aware that someone needs to review their security we take steps to inform them immediately. We never ignore anything that would put anyone at risk," the spokesman added.
Mr Murphy, the MP and MLA for Newry and Armagh, said such threats were "part and parcel of being involved with Sinn Féin".
"Unfortunately for too many of our members it has cost them their lives and I think we are always conscious of that," he said.
A pipe bomb was recently found in Cookstown, close to the home of a local Sinn Féin councillor.

The PSNI have welcomed the sentencing of two men at Laganside Crown Court for a number of offences, following a major investigation into the activities of the east Belfast UVF. James McGrogan, aged 37, and 32-year-old Christopher Cullen were both convicted on Thursday 18th April, for a number of drug-related offences.
