MLA Payrise Recommendation

As thousands across Northern Ireland face job uncertainty, an independent panel is expected to recommend that Northern Ireland's 108 Assembly members get a 3.5% pay rise, it has been revealed.

However, the increase, of around £500 a year, is a lot less than previously predicted.

A report from the Senior Salaries Review Body, due to be published later this week, will reportedly suggest the mileage rate paid to MLAs for official travel should also be cut.

In addition, MLAs, who 'double-job' as MPs, could also face questions over office running costs paid from the public purse, as part of the review.

Earlier this year, the BBC reported MLAs were in-line for a 16% pay increase, the details of which were contained in an internal Stormont document.

The Senior Salaries Review Body is responsible for outlining pay levels for MPs at Westminster, Stormont assembly members and their counterparts in Scotland and Wales.
