Four Dead After Car Crashes Into Shop

Four people have died after a car crashed into a fish and chip shop in West Yorkshire. The Subaru vehicle burst into flames after the Killinghall Fisheries shop collision on Killinghall Road in Laisterdyke, Bradford, at 4.35am. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has been informed because police patrols were in the area at the time of the crash. West Yorkshire Police said IPCC representatives were at the scene. The four dead were travelling in the Subaru, and have not yet been named. The shop partially collapsed and is being assessed by structural engineers.

Police Appeal For Road Traffic Information

Police are appealing for witnesses to a road traffic accident on New Hay Road, Huddersfield, on Wednesday afternoon. At 4.00pm a 71-year-old local man was cycling along New Hay Road towards Outlane. He then came off his red racing bike and was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary where he later died. Any witnesses to the incident are asked to contact West Yorkshire Police on 0845 60 60 606.

Police Seize Cannabis Plants

Police in Oldham have seized a haul of cannabis plants. Cannabis plants. Shortly after 10.30pm on Monday 8 December 2008, police went to a house on Fir Tree Avenue, Oldham, following reports a house had been broken into. Officers searched the house and found 22 illegal plants growing in an upstairs bedroom as well as equipment used to grow the drug. A 25-year-old man and a 20-year-old man were both arrested on suspicion of cultivating cannabis and have been bailed until 27 January 2009 pending further inquiries.

New Compensation For 'Cod War' Trawlermen

The Government will run a new scheme to compensate trawlermen that lost their livelihoods following the 'Cod Wars' of the 1970s. Announcing the scheme, Employment Relations Minister, Pat McFadden said: "The Parliamentary Ombudsman found last year that the breaks rule in the previous scheme was unfair, and recommended that the Government review the eligibility criteria and scheme rules, to ensure they were consistent with the policy intention underlying the scheme. We have now completed that review and have changed the breaks rule." The Government will consult on the details of the new scheme in the New Year. This should enable the new scheme to be launched by the middle of next year. It is expected to cost less than £10 million. Around £43 million was paid out to 4,400 former trawlermen and their dependants under the previous scheme, which was open to claims between 2000 and 2002.
