HSENI Probe Kilkeel Factory Death

A man in his 40s has died after being trapped under machinery at a Co Down production plant.

Keiran McClean was rushed from the Kilkeel facility to Newry's Daisy Hill Hospital last night.

Police said the incident, which took place at Engineering and Construction Products on Rooney Road, was reported to them at around 6pm.

Mr McClean, who had worked for the company for more than 20 years, later died from his injuries.

A PSNI spokesman said the Northern Ireland Health and Safety Executive (HSENI) has been informed of the incident.

The facility remained closed today as officials from the Executive examined the scene.

An official statement this afternoon said that a large steel structure with granite cladding fell on the victim and that the exact circumstances at the time are still under investigation.

However, the HSENI understand the structure was being prepared for moving to another location.

The statement continued: "Our thoughts at this time are with the deceased's family," noting that this incident is "another reminder of the importance of stopping to examine the risks involved in work activities and planning the work in order to ensure the safety of all those involved".
