Road Deaths Reach Eight

The woman who died following a road crash on the M1 motorway in Co Meath this morning is the eight victim of the roads across Ireland in two days.

The 36-year-old sustained serious injuries when her car hit a pole on the northbound lane of the motorway.

It happened just before 9am outside the City North Hotel at Gormanston.

She was removed to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda where she later died.

Earlier, the death of a man in an early morning road accident in Co Tyrone brought the number of people killed on Irish roads up to that point to seven.

That fatal crash happened about two miles from the village of Castlecaulfield with a single vehicle involved in the incident and happened at about 4am on Monday.

The victim's name has not yet been released. The Foygh and Drumreaney roads were closed for a time, but have since reopeoned.

The NI death came as roads in the Irish Republic had earlier claimed a total of six lives over the weekend, one being the death of a motorcyclist in Tipperary.

The 31 year-old motorcyclist was killed in the crash, which happened in Powerstown, Clonmel, Co Tipperary, at 10.40pm and the man died at the scene. No other vehicle was involved.

On Saturday afternoon, two bikes collided at Clonaglin, Kilbeggan, Co Westmeath a charity motorbike ride, the annual Across Ireland Motorcycle Run for the Make A Wish Foundation.

A 35-year-old Polish national died in the incident while the second motorcyclist was also injured, although not seriously.

Another motorcyclist was killed in Kildare flowing a collision with a jeep late on Saturday night.

He was pronounced dead at The Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise. The Driver of the jeep was uninjured.

Meanwhile, a motorcyclist in his 20's was fatally injured when the bike he was riding struck a tractor on the Listowel to Abbeyfeale road.

A female passenger on the bike, also in her 20s was, taken to Kerry General Hospital, the driver of the tractor was not injured.

Elsewhere, a 23-year-old woman was killed when she lost control of the car she was driving and crashed at Kilmacomma, Clonmel, Co Tipperary, at around 3.45am on Sunday.

Another woman died on Saturday night after she was knocked down by a car at Summerhill, Tramore.

Motorcyclist Dies In Carlow Crash
A man has been killed in a road crash in Co Carlow. The motorcyclist died when he collided with a parked vehicle at Closutton, near Leighlinbridge, at around 9.30am this morning. The man’s body has been removed to Kilkenny hospital. His name has not yet been released. Gardaí are investigating the incident.

Motorcyclist Killed In Co Mayo Crash
A man from Northern Ireland has died in a collision in Co Mayo. The crash occurred on the Hollymount to Claremorris Road at around 1.20pm on Sunday. The 55-year-old victim, who was driving a motorcycle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the van was taken to Mayo General Hospital as a precaution.

Motorcyclist Dies Following Co Wicklow Road Crash
A man has died in Co Wicklow when his motorcycle was involved in a road crash in Blessington at around 18:35 on Wednesday evening. The motorcyclist collided with a car at Crosscool Harbour, suffering serious injuries. He was taken to Naas General Hospital, where he died a short time later.

Man Questioned Over Fatal Road Crash In Co Mayo
Garda have detained a man in connection with a fatal road crash in Co Mayo on Sunday, 08 May. A 41-year-old motorcyclist was killed when his bike collided with a van on the N26 at Ballinahaglush at around 3.45pm. A man was arrested and is being detained at Ballina Garda Station.

Woman, 82, Dies In Road Accident
An 82-year-old woman has died following a road accident in Donegal. The crash occurred at around 3.50pm on Monday (18 August) at The Ross in Bundoran. Gardaí have said a car collided with a fence in the incident. The woman was transferred to Sligo Hospital but later died from her injuries. Anyone with information is asked to contact Gardaí.
