| priest guilty of sex charges
a man has been found guilty of 19 sex abuse charges against three men. the former priest, james donaghy, 53, from lady wallace drive in lisburn, had denied a total of 26 charges relating to a period between june 1983 and december 2000, but he has been convicted of indecent assault and serious sexual assault. the jury returned unanimous verdicts on 16 of the charges and majority verdicts on the other three. donaghy was most recently a priest in bangor, but stepped down in 2004.

| there's no superstition in sight in co down as sainsbury's 13th store in northern ireland opened its doors today at balloo retail park in bangor.
some 250 new staff will be employed in the 70,000 sq. ft. store, which has 41,000 sq. ft. of retail space and represents a multi-million pound investment for sainsbury's.
senior management in northern ireland last night welcomed invited guests from the locality for a preview of the new store. guests included dr. stephen farry, minister for employment and learning, the mayor and deputy mayor of bangor, local councillors, council officials as well as representatives of the local chambers of commerce and town centre management.

| a birthday has been celebrated with news that a key provider of emotional support, the samaritans, passed its 50th anniversary last week.
the first ever branch in ireland opened in belfast on 1 november 1961 and the founding branch has been open for business 24-hours a day ever since - except for a few short hours when the centre suffered damage from a nearby bomb.
in 2010, volunteers in the eight branches in northern ireland dealt with 68,482 calls via the 24-hour telephone helpline, supported 156 individuals face-to-face at the north west 200 and replied to 9,526 emails.

| heavy rain has caused flooding in various parts of northern ireland overnight with the areas worst hit being in parts of north and west belfast, ballyclare and also in cushendall and carnlough on the antrim coast road.
other parts of the eastern side of ni were also hit, with reports of localised flooding in banbridge, lurgan and moira. the rain-swollen river lagan south of belfast is pictured here.
according to the met office, counties down and antrim were expected to be worst affected by the rain with some torrential downpours and localised flooding as a result with the psni and the roads service advising motorists to drive with caution.

| up-and-coming hotelier bill wolsey, whose company beannchor group owns the merchant in downtown belfast, has acquired the portaferry hotel - a famous gem in the irish hotel world.
mr wolsey has said that 10 new jobs are expected to be created as the group is due to invest more than £100,000 in the portaferry premises to refurbish the 14 bedroom hotel.
the beannchor group currently has 51 properties in its portfolio, with bars including the spaniard, the cloth ear and muriels, and the leighinmohr hotel in ballymena.

there has been another road tragedy in ni, with a man killed in a car accident in county antrim. the victim was involved in a collision between a car and a motorcycle at the ballysnod road in larne at about 7pm on tuesday evening. police have appealed for witnesses. east antrim alliance mla stewart dickson has expressed deep sadness at the news: "i want to express my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the man who died in this accident. it is always so tragic to hear of news like this and traffic accidents cause so much devastation."
