| while public taxi fares in belfast are due to rise next month, the costs are still lower than other comparable cities in the uk.
the driver & vehicle agency (dva) confirmed there would be an increase of between 13% and 19% depending on the time of travel. this increase will come into operation on 1 august 2008.
however, despite the increase, the fares in belfast remain below those of comparable cities throughout the united kingdom. there is also no evidence to suggest that capital of running costs are lower in northern ireland than elsewhere in great britain.
dva chief executive, brendan magee said: "these increases will mean operators and drivers can recoup costs and ensure vehicles can be properly maintained and periodically upgraded.

| culture minister edwin poots has highlighted the extremely high standard of musicianship demonstrated by northern ireland’s award winning world-class youth orchestra.
the minister, who was speaking after attending one of the ulster youth orchestra’s summer concerts in londonderry’s guildhall, said: “i thoroughly enjoyed tonight’s concert. it was truly refreshing to see the enthusiasm of some of northern ireland’s most gifted young classical musicians. the performance, directed by talented guest conductor andré de ridder, was exceptional and reinforced why the ulster youth orchestra is regarded as one of the best youth orchestra’s in the united kingdom.”

| tony blair has said that chancellor gordon brown will, "in all probability", succeed him as prime minister in the next few weeks.
speaking to gmtv earlier in an interview to mark his tenth anniversary in downing street, mr blair commented on his resignation as prime minister saying: "i will make my position clear next week. i will say something definitive then."
however, speaking to an election rally later on tuesday, mr blair said: "in all probability, a scot will become the prime minister of the united kingdom, someone who has built our economy into one of the strongest in the world and who, as i have said many times before, would make a great prime minister for britain."

| the department of trade and industry has today launched a search to find the most enterprising place in northern ireland.
‘enterprising britain 2006’ is part of a nationwide competition aimed at recognising and rewarding enterprise activity across the united kingdom. the dti in conjunction with invest ni, is looking for the town, city, place or area that best demonstrates the entrepreneurial spirit in the province.
the winner of the regional heat will go forward to compete in the uk finals.

following a slow start, voting at northern ireland’s 620 polling stations is described as "steady" as voters select from the 105 local candidates contesting the province's 18 westminster seats and the 918 representatives competing for 582 council seats.
polling stations across the province opened at 7am and will remain so until 10pm.

| the vice-chancellor of the university of ulster has hit out at the cap on university places in northern ireland, describing it as making "poor sense for the economy" and a "roadblock to self improvement for the people of our community”.

| unionist lagan valley mp, jeffrey donaldson has described as "nonsense" the view that the labour party cannot set up in northern ireland as its citizens are not british subjects.
mr donaldson was reacting to documents – leaked to the daily telegraph last week – which had been drawn up by solicitors engaged by the labour party.
according to labour party rules, eligibility for membership is dependent upon the applicant being a british or irish subject, "or other persons resident in great britain for more than one year".
the solicitors' documents stated that citizens in the province are ineligible for membership as they fall outside the criteria – and are therefore not viewed as british subjects.
