Former Prison Officer Escapes Jail
A bankrupt former prison officer from Leeds has been given a nine month suspended prison sentence for failing to tell the Official Receiver about his debts and land he owned.
Paul Andrew Roberts, a property developer and former prison officer from Wortley pleaded guilty to five charges under the Insolvency Act 1986 at Leeds Crown Court.
Roberts was made bankrupt in September 2006 owing creditors over £128,000. However, he failed to tell the Official Receiver about a debt of almost £300,000, a half completed house in Wetherby, a credit card, bank account and a hire-purchase agreement on his car.
Roberts then attempted to have his bankruptcy annulled claiming he was able to pay off his creditors, but failed to attend court.
After months of investigation, the Official Receiver discovered the full extent of Roberts’ deceit and referred the case to BIS for prosecution.
Paul Roberts was sentenced on Friday 12 February to 36 weeks custody suspended for 18 months, ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and pay £500 costs.
The prosecution was taken by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).

Prison officers suspended over corruption claims
Fourteen prison officers have been suspended from HMP Pentonville following allegations of corruption. A spokesperson for the Prison Service confirmed that the prison officers had been suspended over allegations which concerned trafficking and "inappropriate relations" with prisoners.

Prisons face overcrowding crisis
Prisons in England and Wales are under "enormous pressure" and are facing a "looming overcrowding crisis", according to a charity report. The Prison Reform Trust reported that prison numbers have crept up again since Christmas rising to over 77,000 again.

A notorious killer is set to be released from prison after serving 48 years. Harry Roberts, 78, was jailed for killing three unarmed police officers in Shepherds Bush, west London in 1966. Roberts has allegedly been cleared for release by a parole board.

Call For Degree Educated Prison Officers
A charity for Penal Reform has today released a report recommending that prison officers are educated to degree level in order to better manage prisons and reduce reoffending rates. At present, prison officers undergo eight weeks training before taking responsibility for safety and security within a prison.
