Mephedrone Illegal Under New Act
Mephedrone and other cathinone derivatives will become illegal as Class B drugs from Friday, following the completion of the Parliamentary process today.
Class B drugs carry a maximum prison sentence of five years for possession and a maximum prison sentence of 14 years for supplying and other trafficking offences.
Mephedrone and its related compounds were banned under recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD).
Home Secretary Alan Johnson also took immediate action earlier this month to control mephedrone's availability and reduce its harm.
"Mephedrone and its related substances have been shown to be dangerous and harmful, but it is right we waited for full scientific advice so we can take action that stops organised criminals and dealers tweaking substances to get around the law," he said.
The move came after advice from the chair of the ACMD that mephedrone and the family of cathinone derivatives are dangerous drugs and should be controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 as Class B.
The ACMD expressed concern about the harms it can have on the health and well being of users.
They cited evidence that mephedrone consumption can cause hallucinations, blood circulation problems, rashes, anxiety, paranoia, fits and delusions.

23 Charged With Drug Offences Following Raids
More than 20 people have been charged with drug offences following a number of raids carried out in London, Gravesend, Dover and Deal. A total of 23 people were arrested during twenty raids carried out over three days. The suspects, ranging in age from 17 to 52, have all been charged in connection with the supply of class A drugs.

Second Class stamps to rise to 21p
The price of a basic Second Class postage will rise 1p to 21p from April 1 next year, but the price of a First class stamp will remain unchanged, it has been announced today. First Class prices for heavier letters will fall but there will be increases for heavier Second Class mail.

Brixton Drug Gang Get Long Sentences
A gang of criminals who ran a lucrative drug dealing network from a car tyre shop in Brixton were sentenced last week to a total of 81 years in prison. Nine men, who were previously convicted of conspiracy to supply class A drugs, appeared at Kingston Crown Court today to hear their sentences.

Brown To Decide On Cannabis Reclassification
The Prime Minister has said that the Government needs to issue a warning to young people of the dangers of using cannabis. Gordon Brown was speaking after he received a report from the the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) on cannabis and will now have to decide whether to upgrade the 'weed' from the 'soft' Class C drug to Class B.
