Baby P Doctor 'Breached Professional Duty'

A GP who missed the opportunity to save Baby P before he died has been found guilty of a serious breach of professional duty by the General Medical Council.

Dr Jerome Ikwueke had seen Peter Connelly (referred to as Baby P in court) more than a dozen times before he died, the last time just eight days before his death in August 2007.

Baby Peter had a bleeding ear, head lice and scabs on his scalp when his mother brought him to Dr Ikwueke's surgery on July 26, 2007. He failed to examine the toddler or discuss his case with social workers or health visitors. He had also failed to reply to a request from social services for a report on the child earlier that month.

Baby Peter, who was 17-months-old, died on August 3. His mother Tracey Connelly, pleaded guilty to causing or allowing the death of a child, while her boyfriend Steven Barker and his brother, Jason Owen, were found guilty of the same charge.
