Pope Arrives In The UK

At the start of the first papal visit to the UK for 28 years, Pope Benedict XVI has touched down in Edinburgh.

Upon arrival he was greeted by Prince Philip before travelling to Holyrood House to meet the Queen. He will later lead an open-air Mass at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow.

Although protests are planned, thousands of people are expected to line the streets of Edinburgh to greet him.

The trip is the first to be designated a state visit after being invited by the Queen and is the first trip by a Pontiff to the UK since 1982 when John Paul II visited.

After branding the UK a "Third World country", one of the Pope's aides pulled out of the trip.

En route, the Pope was questioned by the BBC surrounding the abuse scandal by Catholic priests. In response he expressed that it had come as a great personal shock to him and that he wanted to offer the victims "material, psychological and spiritual" help and to protect other children from dangerous priests in the future.

Upon arrival, the Pope was greeted by Lord Patten, the Duke of Edinburgh, Catholic leaders and a 30-strong honour guard from the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

The Vatican said the Pope's visit will highlight the importance of the role of faith has for all in contemporary Britain.

The Pope's stay will cost the taxpayer between £10m and £12m, with the bill for policing estimated at an additional £1.5m.
