Drugs Tested At Glastonbury Festival
Over the weekend at the Glastonbury festival drugs were tested, identified and catalogued within hours of being seized.
The forensic early warning system will see scientists, police and drugs charities working together to build a fast and accurate picture of new drugs being sold and what harmful substances they contain.
This new system was created in response to growing concerns about the rise in use of so-called 'legal highs' and puts the UK at the forefront of international efforts to tackle the issue.
Baroness Browning, Minister for Crime Prevention, said: “We must send a clear message to anyone who takes so-called legal highs - you are playing Russian roulette with your health.
“The Forensic Early Warning System is a pioneering approach that will help us stay one step ahead of unscrupulous manufacturers who peddle in these pernicious products.”
The Minister added: “I am delighted Glastonbury, and other festivals, have supported this initiative and hope together we can help protect young people from the real dangers posed by these drugs.”
Police will take the drugs seized at the festival back to a nearby testing facility where scientists will be able to analyse and identify them.
All intelligence gathered will be shared with other summer festival organisers so they can take appropriate steps to tackle their use.
The government will also monitor the data and consider further action, including asking its independent advisors, the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, to consider the prevalence and harms posed by any of these new psychoactive substances.

23 Charged With Drug Offences Following Raids
More than 20 people have been charged with drug offences following a number of raids carried out in London, Gravesend, Dover and Deal. A total of 23 people were arrested during twenty raids carried out over three days. The suspects, ranging in age from 17 to 52, have all been charged in connection with the supply of class A drugs.

Brixton Drug Gang Get Long Sentences
A gang of criminals who ran a lucrative drug dealing network from a car tyre shop in Brixton were sentenced last week to a total of 81 years in prison. Nine men, who were previously convicted of conspiracy to supply class A drugs, appeared at Kingston Crown Court today to hear their sentences.

A 47-year-old man has been convicted of fraud in relation to the making and selling of fake bomb detectors. Gary Bolton, of Redshank Road in Chatham, Kent, made "nothing more than boxes with handles and antennae", which were then sold for £10,000 each, the Old Bailey heard.
