£18m cash boost for green power plants
The environment and rural communities received a boost today as
Energy Minister Brian Wilson announced a grant package of over £18 million
to help build five green power plants in England.
The funding has been released from the Government's Bioenergy Capital
Grants Scheme - an essential component in establishing power
generation plants fuelled by energy crops, wood and agricultural
by-products.
Projects in Staffordshire, Somerset, Wiltshire and Devon will receive
a total of £18.74 million to help build biomass power plants that will
produce enough heat and electricity to meet the needs of over 90,000
homes - equivalent to a city the size of Southampton.
Mr Wilson said: "The benefits of renewable energy are self-evident. Local businesses, the community and the environment all reap the rewards. Bioenergy is especially beneficial to the rural economy.
"In the recent Energy White Paper we made the commitment to supply 10% of our electricity requirements from renewable sources by 2010,
as well as a 60% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050.
"We have supported these commitments with action - a further £60m has
been made available to the renewable energy sector, bringing our total funding to nearly £350m over four years.
"Power from biomass is a vital component to help us reach our
environmental goals, fulfil our energy needs and create employment -
and we are prepared to back this with substantial funding."

Nuclear power back on UK generation agenda

EDF To Takeover British Energy
The Government welcomed EDF's proposed £12.5 billion takeover offer for British Energy Group and the British Energy Board's recommendation of the offer to its shareholders. The Government has committed to accept the cash offer of 774p per share for its 36% stake held by the Nuclear Liabilities Fund (NLF), subject to certain conditions.

Blair CBI speech disrupted by Greenpeace protest
Greenpeace activists have disrupted Tony Blair’s speech on nuclear power at the Confederation of British Industry conference. Two protestors scaled the ceiling above the speaker’s podium before the Prime Minister’s speech and unfurled banners saying ‘Nuclear – Wrong Answer’ and dropped confetti, to symbolise ash from radioactive fallout.
