M4 Motorway Scam Targets Drivers

Drivers who stopped to help a male, posing as a lone motorist, are being conned out of hundreds of pounds, according to police.

A man, carrying a green fuel can, is believed to stand on various slip roads between Junction 19 of the M4 where it meets the M32, and Junction 15 at the A419 Swindon turn-off.

He claims that his vehicle has broken down elsewhere and asks motorists for a lift to the nearest service station. When on route he pretends to take a call from the Highways Agency or for the police who need his car to be moved immediately at a cost of around £800.

Good Samaritans offered to help him out towards the cost, but when they dropped him at the service station they never hear from him again.

It is believed that swindler has been able to scam hundreds of pounds from drivers.

Wiltshire Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
