MPs Vote For Smoking In Cars Ban

MPs have voted in favour of a ban on smoking in cars carrying children, saying that legislation could be introduced in 2015.

According to a report by the BBC, ministers have said they will act "sooner rather than later" with legislation potentially being introduced ahead of the next general election.

It is understood that the details of any legislation are still to be established.

MPs voted in favour of the possible ban by 376 votes to 107. It gives ministers in England and Wales the power to introduce a ban.

MPs will be allowed a free vote on proposals to introduce a smoking ban in England, including an option to introduce a total ban. MPs will have three options to choose from when the vote takes place at the report stage of the Health Bill in the Commons later this month.

A vote is to take place in the Welsh Assembly today on banning people from smoking in cars when children are present. If approved, the ban would come into effect on 1 October, 2015, with a similar ban in England also being enforced on the same day. In 2007, legislation was passed in Wales to make smoking in enclosed public places illegal.

Wales To Ban Smoking In Cars With Children
Welsh Health Minister Mark Drakeford has confirmed that a ban on smoking in cars carrying children is to be introduced on 01 October. The ban, which will see a £50 fine issued to anyone caught breaking the new law, is being introduced in Wales on the same day as it comes into force in England.
