Asbestos Discovered In Fire Damaged School

People living near a disused school in North Lanarkshire badly damaged in a fire early this morning have been warned that asbestos has been found in the building.

Fire crews were called to the former Drumpark Primary School on Coatbridge Road, at about 06:30.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said a follow-up search of the building, which has been "severely damaged" in the fire, revealed asbestos.

They have advised local residents to keep windows closed while operations to safely remove the substance is carried out.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
